Painting description:
The Rough-Legged Hawk (or Buzzard) is a large Buteo, like the Red-tailed Hawk, and is of a similar size, but with slightly narrower wings and longer tail. Like the Snowy Owl they breed in the arctic in summer and migrate further south in winter. There is quite a bit of colour variation – some birds are almost completely dark brown with very little streaking, but the characteristic plumage shows a broad brown chest-band, white head with heavy streaking, a white tail with a dark band and a square dark carpal patch on the under wing. The painting depicts an individual in a field near Wyoming, Ontario. South-western Ontario, because of the extensive farm fields, is a prime area to see these birds in the winter months.
