A large owl (16-25” with 37-50” wingspan), though not as large as the Great Grey or Great Horned. It’s feet and talons are relatively small, so this owl preys on small rodents, but has a remarkably varied diet that includes birds, insects, crustaceans and even fish. Unlike it’s relative, the endangered Spotted Owl of the Pacific North-west, this bird’s numbers and range are expanding; it seems to be replacing the Spotted Owl in western North America. It’s colouration ranges from a dull reddish-brown to grey, and features scalloped feathers on the head, upper back, and upper chest. It’s calls vary, but it is best known for its 8-note booming series of hoots that can carry over long distances. The painting depicts an individual on the hunt in its preferred habitat: deciduous woods where the trees do not have many low branches.
