I'm very pleased to now be selling my father's mixed media wildlife / birds of prey paintings here on my shop!

  • All paintings use a combination of traditional and digital techniques. The work begins with detailed drawings, in black or coloured graphite. Oil-painting washes are added before the image is scanned and completed with digital painting. All the prints on offer are somewhat smaller than the original works.
  • Prices are for museum quality giclée prints on canvas with stretcher frames included. Prints on paper, and some smaller sizes are available upon request.
  • Shipped directly from printer.  For non-North American orders, prints cannot be shipped with stretcher frames. Please email to inquire.

Painting description:

Portrait of the same owl depicted in flight in the other GHO painting, identified as a female due to its size and higher pitched call. Great Horned Owls show a great degree of colour variation throughout N. America. Birds of the Pacific north-west are very dark, those of the south-west are paler and grey, and sub-arctic birds are paler still to almost white. The paintings show birds that have dark grey-brown backs and wings, a rufus facial disc and reddish-brown streaks on the chest. The ear tufts, or plumicorns, have nothing to do with hearing (the ears on the side of the bird’s head), but are thought to be the equivalent of facial expressions in humans, serving as a visual clue to relations with other owls.
